The Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company Inc. teaches fire prevention through out the year. The Fire Company holds an event on the first Sunday in October to kick off fire prevention week, which is located at the bandstands on Rehoboth Avenue. The event provides the general public with information about home and fire safety. The apparatus from Rehoboth and surrounding fire companies are on hand for the public to view and ask questions about. This event also provides the public with greater understanding of the services available from agencies in Sussex County and the State of Delaware.
The Fire Prevention Committee goes to local schools and pre-schools through out the fire district to educate the children on the importance of fire safety and STOP DROP AND ROLL. The committee puts on a demonstration with a firefighter that is dressed turn out gear to show the children how important it is to not be afraid of a firefighter. This allows the children to see what the firefighter would look like and how they would sound when they talk.
This program also teaches the children how to keep close to the floor and not to panic if a fire would break out in a residence or a structure. The children are taught how important it is to have a meeting place outside their residence for their family if a fire would break out. They are also told how important it is to have two escape plans out of their home. When outside they are taught to go to the next door neighbors to call 911. When calling 911 the children are told what they have to provide the operator. The Fire Company has a 911 simulator that allows the children to dial 911 and talk to an operator. The operator asks the child a series of questions they should know, for example: name, address, phone number, and what the problem is. The children are also shown pictures and are asked if they should dial 911 if it were to happen to them.
The committee shows the children how important it is to change the battery in the smoke detector and let the children hear the actual sound if the detector should go off. The committee also talks to the children about carbon monoxide detectors and what to do if one of them goes off. They tell the children how important it is to change the batteries in all of their detectors when their parents change time for Daylight Saving's on the clocks.
After the committee talks to the children, they give them a ride on a fire truck. The children have the best time when they get to ride on Big Red. If the children are old enough the committee will pull the forestry line off the fire truck. They allow them to hold the hose and spray some water to see what it feels like when a firefighter uses the hose in an actual fire.
At the end of the day the children have a good overview of what to do in case of an emergency.
